Important German composer (1813–1883) who, by expanding harmonic, instrumental, and dramatic forces to a previously undreamed-of degree, single-handedly revolutionized opera and attained status as one of the most influential geniuses in the history of music. ALS in German, signed "Rich. Wagner," one page, 5 x 7.25, March 6, 1870. Letter to book dealer Friedrich Prell in Luzern. In part (translated): "I quite wish to have another copy from Schiller as well as from Shakespeare. I do not like the robust double binding and I believe that the great poets deserve every single work to be bound." In fine condition, with light intersecting mailing folds (professional reinforcement to horizontal fold on reverse), and a mild shade of uniform toning, a bit heavier along bottom edge.
Just one day earlier, Wagner took a respite from working on his autobiography and visited the town of Bayreuth in Bavaria. Having visited the area decades earlier, he was attracted to the town's opera house, setting into motion plans culminating with his purchase of that property in February 1871. Unique correspondence referencing two of the greatest playwrights-William Shakespeare and Friedrich Schiller-and the belief expressed here that "the great poets deserve every single work to be bound."
