Description

A year after turning a man into an insect in Metamorphosis, Kafka writes his on-again, off-again financee

Much lauded and influential Czech-born writer (1883–1924) whose man-turned-insect story Metamorphosis (1915) and novel The Trial (1925) have earned a permanent and prominent place in the canon of modern literature. Hand-addressed mailing envelope, addressed in Kafka's hand to his fiancée, Felice Bauer, in Westerland, 5.5 x 3.75, postmarked August 9, 1916, signed within his return address on the reverse "Dr. F. Kafka." Mild postal wear and a few tiny ink traces and faint brushes to return address (not affecting signature), otherwise fine condition.

Kafka was twice engaged to Bauer-once in 1914 and again in 1917. Their romance permanently dissolved in 1917, however just a year after addressing this envelope, with nuptials never taking place. The relationship between the couple was interesting...and shows an ongoing conflict in his life. Although he desired to be married, it was also an institution which he feared...and ultimately avoided. Interestingly, although Felice kept all of the letters sent to her by the writer, he kept none of her correspondence. Anything in Kafka's hand is extremely rare.
