Description

Hemingway gives his beloved sister $250 nine months before her 1933 wedding-vows that would shatter the relationship between the once-close siblings

Bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Hemingway, payable to Carol Hemingway for $250.00, September 8, 1932. In very good condition, with a vertical fold, expected cancellation stamps and holes, with holes lightly affecting signature, a bit of light toning, and show-through from Carol's endorsement on reverse.

Carol Hemingway was the famed author's younger sister, born in 1911- two days before his 12th birthday-which once prompted Ernest to call her his 'own special present.' Their relationship was very good in Carol's early years, with Hemingway being named her legal guardian following their father's 1928 death. This particular check was written just nine months before a fatal falling out between the siblings after Hemingway tried to forbid his sister from marrying in 1933. Hemingway claimed the marriage would never last-though the marriage between Carol and John Gardner spanned 65 years. Purportedly, Gardner had once referred to Hemingway as 'an overgrown boy scout'-a statement that broke familial bonds. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
