Description

Early Hemingway check from the year of his first African safari

Bank check, 6.5 x 3, filled out and signed by Hemingway, payable to First National Bank of Key West for $200.00, February 3, 1933. In very good condition, with a central vertical fold, expected cancellation holes, and show-through from stamp on reverse, as well as a second stamp, affecting portion of signature. After his return home from safari Hemingway started writing The Green Hills of Africa. The book did not sell well at first, which depressed Hemingway, but his two major African short stories were quickly recognized to be among the highlights of his writings, ‘The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber’ and ‘The Snows of Kilimanjaro.’ Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
