Partly-printed DS, one page, 21.75 x 17, October 12, 1866. Four language ship's paper issued to "Joshua G. Lapham, master or commander of the Ship called Canton …lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with provisions, stores, and utensils for a whaling voyage." Signed by Seward as secretary of state and also bearing a rubber-stamped signature of Andrew Johnson. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, old reinforcement along reverse of central vertical fold, scattered toning, some light mirroring of ink from folding, and some light damp staining to bottom edge. The white wafer seal is toned, but intact. The Canton sailed in 1866 with Lapham and returned in 1870 with over 1300 barrels of sperm oil. In 1909 she was wrecked at the island Malo one of the Cape Verde group in the Atlantic. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
