Description

As his term nears its end, President Adams and future Chief Justice Marshall send a ship to South America

Partly-printed DS, signed 'John Adams,' as president and 'John Marshall,' as secretary of state, one page, 19.75 x 15.25, January 26, 1801. A four-language ship’s papers issued to Jeremiah Taylor 'master and commander of the Sch. Called Victory…lying at present in the port of N. London bound for Demerary and laden with Livestock, provisions, lumber.' Signed in the middle of the third panel by Adams, and countersigned by Secretary of State John Marshall. Document has been professionally silked on both sides. In good condition, with aforementioned silking, toning from tape repairs along folds, with one strip of toning over most of Adams’s signature, several areas of paper loss to middle and edges, scattered toning and soiling, and a circular area of toning from seal. The red wax seal is cracked but intact, and the white wafer seal is worn, but intact. Adams’ and Marshall’s signatures are still quite bold and legible. Despite the flaws, a desirable format from the second Commander-in-Chief. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
