"I had 149 fights and won nearly all of them"

Heavyweight boxer (1873-1953) whose career spanned from 1893-1904, who lost a 25-round fight to James Jeffries in 1899. Jeffries always claimed that Sharkey gave him his hardest fights stating that Sharkey was the roughest, toughest, and bravest man he ever fought. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 3.75, April 29, 1946. Short letter on a postcard bearing an image of a young Sharkey on the left side. In full: "I was 17 years old when this picture was taken and I started to fight at that time in Honolulu. I had 149 fights and won nearly all of them." Reverse of postcard bears a printed poem entitled 'The Creed of a Man of the World,' by Sharkey. In fine condition.
