Imprisoned for murder at the age of 18, Robert Stroud (1890–1963) spent more than 54 years in jail (47 in isolation), where he became a self-educated authority on birds and bird diseases and author of an important reference, Stroud’s Digest of the Diseases of Birds, published in 1942. A self-taught legal scholar as well, Stroud wrote an exhaustive history of the federal legal system. ALS signed “Love, Bob, Robert Stroud, #594,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 8 x 10.25, . Letter to his sister Mamie. In part: “I think I told you that I have a sick man in with me. Well, he is a colored fellow that I have known for more than twenty years. He is suffering with neuritis and is in a lot of pain and practically bedridden. He is a man who has been an athlete all his life, and this is the first time that he has ever been seriously ill, and if you know anything about colored people, you know that they do not take to illness well. In addition, this fellow feels that there are people who would like to destroy him just because of his color, and always having been an intelligent and self reliant person, he feels his helplessness very keenly, so taking care of him is no picnic.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a uniform shade of toning, and a couple of red pencil lines and notations.
