Description

William Howard Russell

Irish war correspondent )1820–1907) who made his reputation during the Crimean War for his outspoken, uncensored stories describing the mismanagement of the British Army. Five ALSs, each signed “W. H. Russell,” one dated 1852, one dated 1853, and the rest undated. One reads, in part: “You may readily imagine how disappointed I am at not being able to serve you in a matter to which you seemed to attach so much importance but the fact is the circumstances of the times were against you. I pressed the point as hard as I could but I was met with immeasurable objection.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, mild staining, and residue from past mounting touching four of the signatures.
