Description

Grissom’s terrestrial passport, signed twice, issued five weeks before his Liberty Bell 7 flight

Gus Grissom’s personal passport, number Y022286, issued on June 16, 1961, just five weeks before his flight aboard Liberty Bell 7. Passport measures 3.75 x 6, and is signed inside on his personal information page, “Virgil I. Grissom.” The page also states “The bearer is abroad on an official assignment for the United States Government.” Affixed below the personal information page is Grissom’s 2.5 x 3 passport snapshot, signed along the top in blue ink, “Virgil I. Grissom.” Passport also bears three visa stamps from Spain, Panama, and Guatemala respectively. The Panama visa is dated May 29, 1963, and was undoubtably stamped as Grissom entered the country with his fellow astronauts for Tropic Survival Training at Albrook Air Force Base in the Panama Canal Zone from June 3-6, 1963. The last visa is dated May 30, 1964, less than a year from when Grissom would be the command pilot for the Gemini 3 mission. In fine condition, with expected handling and age wear. A highly personal item, enhanced by two signatures, chronicling a small portion of Grissom’s life in between missions. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
