Description

Scarce full Washington free frank to Clement Biddle, the inefficient Commissary General at Valley Forge

Full free frank, measuring 9.25 x 7.5 unfolded, with franked panel measuring 5 x 3.25, addressed in another hand to “Col. Clement Biddle, Philadelphia,” and franked in the lower left “Free Go: Washington.” In very good to fine condition, with several professional repairs along folded edges of address panel and paper loss from seal at top and bottom edge, some scattered light toning and soiling, and a light central vertical fold through address panel. Washington’s signature is bold and unaffected. Biddle served as deputy quartermaster general of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey militia as well as the Commissary General at Valley Forge under Washington. The hardships faced by Washington and his men are, of course, legendary. Lost to history, however, are those men like Biddle—who as the officer in charge of providing supplies such as boots and clothing failed in his responsibilities. The inefficiency of the commissary departments meant that nearly 3,000 soldiers in camp in Valley Forge were unfit for duty because they were barefoot and destitute of clothing. Free franks from the Father of Our Country are always rare and desirable and with a significant Revolutionary War association offers an exceptional example from this most important of American statesmen! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
