Description

President Grant sends a distinguished portrait in the year of his re-election

Fabulous 4.5 x 6 engraved portrait of Grant, by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, signed and inscribed, as president, under his image, “U. S. Grant, To Mrs. Geo. W. Childs, March 10, 1872.” Simply framed to an overall size of 5 x 7. In fine condition, with a small area of damp staining to lower right corner.

Grant was nearing the end of his first term as chief executive and working on his re-election campaign when he presented this photo the wife George William Child. Child was a newspaper publisher and co-owner of the Philadelphia Public Ledger. Child’s partner in the publishing business was Anthony Joseph Drexel, founder of Drexel University and President Grant’s financial advisor. Signed about a week after Grant approved a bill to make Yellowstone the first National Park and on the day he appointed the Interoceanic Canal Commission to determine the best of three proposed canal plans connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific, this portrait calls attention to a somewhat blurred line between the objectivity of the press and the presidency! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
