Description

Incredible image from TR’s Rough Rider days

Superlative oversized crystal-clear 5.5 x 9 (trimmed) cabinet photo, by Rockwood of New York, of Roosevelt in his Rough Riders uniform, posing against a naturalistic backdrop with his gloved hand poised jauntily on his hip, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Earl Gulick with regards of Theodore Roosevelt, Nov 30th 1900.” The photo is affixed to its original mount, which has been trimmed to a size of 8 x 10.25. In fine condition, with aforementioned lightly trimmed edges, and some scattered light surface marks.

This image’s original recipient was a celebrated boy soprano who toured with William McKinley during the campaign of 1900, performed at the White House for both McKinley and Roosevelt, and sang at McKinley’s funeral. At the time this image was bestowed, McKinley and TR had just captured the election, with the vice president-elect selecting a heroic image from his past as a way of saying thanks. One of the finest and most characteristic signed Roosevelt images we’ve encountered. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
