Description

Dolley quotes contemporary Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth

First Lady who became legendary for her gracious manners and prowess as a hostess and who was acknowledged as a powerful asset to husband James Madison’s political career. In 1814, she famously saved many state papers and a portrait of George Washington as British soldiers advanced on the nation’s capital, barely escaping with the national treasures as the White House was occupied and looted. For the remainder of her life she retained a place of honor in Washington society and was granted a lifelong seat on the floor of the House of Representatives. AQS, signed “D. P. Madison,” and dated June 24, 1842, on an off-white 4 x 5 folded sheet. Madison pens a quote from Chapter XI of Helen by Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth. In full: “’If good people (said Arch bishop / Usher) would but make goodness agreeable and smile instead of frowning in their virtue, how many they would win to the good cause.’” In fine condition, with a small brush to end of signature, and a uniform shade of mild toning. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
