Description

Wilson lashes out at a League of Nations opponent and Tennessee senator he saw as “one of the least trustworthy of my professed supporters”

TLS, one page, 7 x 9.5, personal letterhead, August 28, 1923. Letter to W. A. S. Furlow. In full: “In reply to your letter of August twenty-fifth, I do not feel at liberty to say more than this: That I regard Mr. Shields during my administrations as one of the least trustworthy of my professed supporters. Thanking you for the friendship so generously evidenced by your letter.” Scattered light toning and soiling, and a heavy strip of toning along central horizontal fold from old tape repair on reverse to partial separation, otherwise very good condition.

John Knight Shields was a Democratic US senator from Tennessee who served from 1913 to 1925, and a staunch opponent of Wilson’s peace plan that created the League of Nations. His dissenting vote in the Senate led to a loss of his popularity and eventually his defeat in the 1924 senatorial election. Wilson’s bitterness in this letter and description of Shields “as one of the least trustworthy of my professed supporters” was echoed in the primary election campaign, when the former president wrote a letter criticizing Shields for not supporting his policies. Shields’ challenger, Lawrence D. Tyson, easily captured the Democratic nomination and later won the general election. A straightforward response from a clearly upset chief executive. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
