Description

Harrison check following a senatorial loss and with the presidency still in his future

Fletcher and Sharpe’s bank check, 7.5 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Harrison, “Benj. Harrison” payable to Self for $15.00, March 24, 1879. Archivally cloth matted and framed, with a portrait of Harrison to an overall size of 15.25 x 19. In fine condition, with cancellation cut to body, some scattered light creases, and a few trivial brushes to date and pay line. Following a failed bid as an Indiana senator a year earlier, President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed Harrison to the Mississippi River Commission in 1879. The commission was founded to facilitate internal improvements on that river. Fletcher and Sharpe was an Indianapolis-based bank that failed in 1884. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
