Description

Through two separate checks, Cleveland pays as the end draws near while his widow’s new life begins

Two checks: Knickerbocker Trust Company bank check, 8 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Cleveland, payable to Susan M. Usburne for $25.00; and a Seaboard National Bank check, 8.5 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed “Frances F. Cleveland,” payable to F. A. O. Schwarz for $11.00. Both are archivally cloth matted and framed by the Gallery of History, with a metallic portrait of the couple to an overall size of 24.5 x 13.5. Grover’s check bears a central vertical fold, expected cancellation holes, small cancellation cut to right side, and a few stray ink marks, otherwise fine condition. Frances’s bears a vertical fold, affecting a single letter of signature, cancellation holes to body, and some light creasing to top left, otherwise fine condition. The former president signed this check as he approached the end of his life. By the fall of 1907 his health had drastically deteriorated and he suffered a fatal heart attack the following year. A pleasant counterpoint in this display is Mrs. Cleveland’s payment to the famed toy store, dated just three days before she remarried, this time to Princeton University professor Thomas J. Preston. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
