Description

The fifth president dispatches payment from Monroe Hill in 1826

Handwritten bank draft, 7.5 x 4.25, written out and signed by Monroe to Richard Smith, Esq. of Washington, dated July 12, 1826. In full: “Pay to R. H. Henderson on order forty five dolrs. To account of your very obt. Servant, James Monroe.” Archivally cloth matted and framed by Gallery of History so endorsements on reverse may be viewed as well, along with an engraved portrait of Monroe, to an overall size of 14.5 x 17.5. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, expected cancellation cut to body, not affecting signature, and a couple stray marks and creases. Like many early US presidents, Monroe’s finances suffered after leaving office. At the time he authorized this payment, the Founding Father was residing at Monroe Hill on the grounds of the University of Virginia. He had sold his family farm to the university shortly after taking office. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
