In Hollywood after causing a sensation on Broadway in a breakout role in The Petrified Forest, Bogie gets his finances in order for the tax man

Very early TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 10, 1936. Letter written from the Garden of Allah Hotel in Hollywood to the Gilber Miller Office at the Henry Miller Theatre. In full: “In the preparation of my 1935 income tax return, it is necessary that I know the total amount of money paid me during 1935 for my services in ‘Petrified Forest.’ I shall appreciate your sending me this information in care of my business manager’s office, and enclose herewith for your convenience in replying an addressed envelope.”

In fine condition, with a horizontal fold through tops of a few letters of signature, a rusty paperclip mark to top left, as well as a diagonal crease and paperclip impression to same area.

Bogart’s brooding, glowering performance in the Broadway role of Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest helped create the Bogie persona that would become the actor’s trademark. Film and theater experts agree that the sensational impact Bogart made on Broadway with this role cannot be overstated. At the time of this letter, the actor had migrated to Hollywood and was reprising the role for Warner Brothers’ big screen adaptation. Poised for bigger things, he took time to write the New York City theater where he got his start to confirm “the total amount of money paid me during 1935 for my services in ‘Petrified Forest’” as he prepared his taxes. That play, and the subsequent film role, marked Bogart’s first steps toward his eventual iconic status. A piece of Hollywood history from the dawn of Bogie’s legendary career. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
