Description

Rare Teddy Roosevelt letter sent while on safari in British East Africa to collect specimens for the Smithsonian

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, August 6, 1909. Letter written from Naivasha in British East Africa to a member of the Whitefriars Club. In full: “I much appreciate the very courteous invitation from the White Friars Club. I wish it were in my power to accept but I am sorry to say that my stay in London will be so brief that it is out of the question for me to make any additional engagements.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, rusty paperclip mark to top edge, professional repair to blank top left, and light show-through from thin strip of adhesive on reverse. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. After he decided he would not seek reelection in 1908, President Roosevelt announced that he would go to Africa on a hunting expedition to collect specimens for the Smithsonian. He sailed with his party, officially called the Smithsonian African Expedition, from New York on March 24, 1909, three weeks after he left the White House, and, after a brief stop in Naples, reached Mombasa, British East Africa, on April 21, 1909. Letters written by Roosevelt during his African safari are very rare and highly desirable. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
