Description

An exquisite Brahms cabinet photo

Famed German composer (1833–1897) whose works in the Classical spirit, written in the midst of the Romantic era, take a place among the most enduring music of the 19th century. Among his best-known works are four symphonies, numerous concerti, all manner of chamber and keyboard works, and the large-scale choral masterpiece German Requiem. Rare 4.5 x 6.5 cabinet portrait by C. Brasch of Berlin depicting the bearded composer looking off to his right, blindstamped “1894” in the lower right corner and signed in ink above his head, “J. Brahms,” adding what appears to be a place name. Small wrinkle near right edge, extremely subtle soiling to borders, and very faint silvering to the dark areas of the image, otherwise a beautiful photograph in fine condition. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
