American political cartoonist and illustrator (1840–1902) best known for devising the donkey and elephant symbols of the Democratic and Republican parties and the familiar “American” version of Santa Claus. Uncommon 4 x 6.5 Sarony cabinet portrait of the impressively-whiskered artist in three-quarter profile, boldly signed in ink in the lower border, “Th: Nast, April 20, 1885.” Moderate image wrinkling primarily to edges, light silvering, a crack to lower left corner, soiling to borders, and some scattered stains, otherwise very good condition.
