Description

Harrison sends congratulations to the new Peruvian president “to strengthen and draw closer the friendly ties which have so long and happily united the two Republics”

Unusual manuscript DS, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page both sides, 10.5 x 14, October 23, 1890. An official letter of state in which Harrison congratulates the recently elected President of Peru. In part: “In congratulating you on your election, I take pleasure in assuring you of the constant purpose I hold, to omit no effort on my part which may tend to strengthen and draw closer the friendly ties which have so long and happily united the two Republics.” Countersigned by Acting Secretary of State Alvey A. Adee. In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds (one touching signature) and two stray ink marks to first page. On the international front, Harrison was the most active president since Abraham Lincoln. He convened the first Pan-American Conference in 1889. He negotiated an American protectorate over the Samoan Islands, attempted to annex Hawaii, and continued the work of modernizing and expanding the United States Navy into a world-class fleet. A well-preserved example representing Harrison’s commitment to international policies and relations. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
