“How proud I am that my 53rd film, ‘The Family Plot,’ has been selected from the Filmex ‘76 Premiere”

TLS, one page, 6.25 x 9, personal letterhead, January 28, 1976. Hitchcock writes Mrs. Simon J. Fluor. In full: “I’m most sorry that a vicious flu attack has kept my wife Alma and me from joining you at lunch today. As the world knows we love lunching…especially at The Bistro. My main regret is that my absence prevents me from expressing personally to you and others of your committee how proud I am that my 53rd film, ‘The Family Plot,’ has been selected from the Filmex ‘76 Premiere. Although I have been fortunate to gather numerous honors throughout the world from my work with film, it is especially pleasing to be honored in one’s own backyard—Hollywood. Alma and I look forward to March 21 with much anticipation. Thank you for your support and I do hope you find something in the attached Paris edition of Vogue to interest you about the director you have chosen to honor. If not, there are some fascinating advertisements to peruse.” He has added his self-portrait profile caricature at the lower left corner of the page. In fine condition, with light creasing along the right edge, scattered soiling, and a few rust marks at the top border.

Although not by design, the 1976 dark comedy/thriller turned out to be Hitchcock’s final film, as his own ill health and a stroke suffered by his wife took their toll on the creative process until his 1980 death. It was prophetic, then, that those in charge of Filmex—a Los Angeles film festival held in the 1970s and early 1980s and the predecessor of the American Film Institute's Los Angeles International Film Festival—saw fit to kick off their 1976 festival by debuting the film. As noted, Hitchcock and his wife eagerly anticipated the big night—arriving in style via a Universal Studios tour bus. Honoring the great director for his contribution to film, event organizers named Hitchcock the first-ever recipient of the Filmex Award, with several celebrities paying homage to him before he delivered a speech.
