Description

Mexican War directive from Santa Anna eight days after the loss of Vera Cruz to US forces led by Gen. Winfield Scott, ordering the General who surrendered to be imprisoned

LS signed “Ant. Lopez Santa Anna,” one page trimmed in size to 7.5 x 9.75, April 6, 1847. Santa Anna writes to the Commandant of Jalapa, ordering Brig. General D. Juan Morales, and Generals D. José Juan Landero and D. José Duran to march immediately to Perote, “as a consequence of the surrender and departure from Vera Cruz…to the troops of the United States to the north, surrendering other places….” In very good condition, with trimming as noted (a few tiny chips), intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, tear to text with old tape repair to reverse, and wrinkling and light soiling. The signature is bold and dark. An excellent example of Santa Anna’s swift decision making. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
