War-dated handwritten endorsement, signed as president, “A. Lincoln,” dated September 5, 1861, on an off-white 4 x 3.5 slip clipped from a larger document. Lincoln writes: “I have never had my attention particularly drawn to the appointment of Sutlers; but if they are being appointed, I think Mr. Pool makes a fair claim to one— A. Lincoln, Sep. 5, 1861.” Several light brushes to text and date, a few stray ink marks to bottom, and some scattered light toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
On the day of this endorsement, one in which he supports Mr. Pool as a “sutler”— a civilian merchant who sells provisions to an army in the field, in camp, or in quarters—Lincoln’s schedule included meeting with his top generals—including John C. Frémont and Winfield Scott—about Missouri military affairs. He also approved the purchase of 100,000 muskets and 18,000 sabers. Perhaps the president was eager to tie-up loose ends as the following day, his wife and family were scheduled to return to Washington, DC, from a trip. Penned just a few months into his presidency and shortly after the start of the Civil War, the sudden need for additional supplies was brought on by the realization that the hostilities would not be over quickly.
