Description

Uncommon early full-length pose of the author in what would become his trademark white suit

Dignified vintage 3.25 x 5.5 full-length postcard photo of the author dressed in white holding his hat and walking stick, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Very truly yours, Mark Twain, Apl/04.” In fine condition, with lightly trimmed side borders and some scattered light silvering to darker portions of background.

This photo, taken in the 1880s, is unique in that it shows the author in a white suit...some 20 years before he famously began wearing them on the lecture circuit. Although some pop cultural references maintain that Twain had always attired himself in such an outfit, the generally accepted reality is that he adopted the practice only after the 1904 death of his wife, Olivia...although this image seems to debunk that theory! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
