Description

Jackie dual endorses a covert payment as “Mrs. John F. Kennedy” and “Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy”

Personal check, 6 x 2.75, drawn on the account of Daniel Mahon, payable to “Mrs. John F. Kennedy” for $151.05, June 2, 1955, and twice-endorsed on the back as “Mrs. John F. Kennedy” and “Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.” In fine condition, with vertical fold, a few spots of soiling, a tiny edge chip, and expected cancellation stamps, one barely touching the bottom of her maiden name. According to the consignor, his grandfather, Daniel Mahon, owned a New York City fabric store called McCutchens in the 1940s and 1950s where Jackie Kennedy was a customer. As the two got to know each other, Mrs. Kennedy would often borrow money from Mahon so she could make purchases at other stores where she had no charge account. Kennedy told the shopkeeper that JFK wouldn’t give her any money, so she would borrow funds in order to keep the future president in the dark about her spending habits. A great tale and supporting evidence of Jackie’s personal economic stimulus plan! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
