Description

Strong accusations from the court-martialed Union general: “Stanton, Chase, Halleck & others all aided to keep generals down”

Union major general who fought at Antietam and Second Bull Run. Porter was court-martialed in 1863 for disobeying an order from Gen. Pope to attack but was exonerated in 1878. ALS signed “F. J. Porter,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, October 27, 1896. Letter to General William B. Franklin. In full: “Please tell me, confidentially, if you know anything of the enclosed assertion that McClellan asked for the interview with Lee. I never knew McC to talk politics or assert any idea of wishing to become a candidate. I know the powers that were feared him and that fear was the cause of his removal and the cause of preventing other independent commanders becoming successful and sufficiently conspicuous as to be likely to be put forward as candidates & thus interfere with Lincoln’s chances. Stanton, Chase, Halleck & others all aided to keep generals down and to remove when desirable and I presume that fear of you caused your transfer.” In fine condition, with a light brush to signature. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
