Description

The Lizard King signs a management check just a few months after “The Miami Incident”

Endorsed Johnson & Harband Management Account business check, 8.5 x 3.25, filled out in type and signed Robert L. Greene, payable to James D. Morrison for $150.00, July 18, 1969. Endorsed on the reverse in black ink, “J. Morrison.” Matted with a portrait of Morrison on stage and framed, so that both sides may be seen, to an overall size of 20 x 18.5. In fine condition, with cancellation stamps to body, and a bank stamp under Morrison’s endorsement.

When Morrison signed the back of this check in July 1969, his future was uncertain and the end was near. The Doors had released their fourth album, The Soft Parade, a piece with an experimental feel designed to maintain the band’s momentum—but only served as a lightning rod for criticism. The lackluster response was the latest in a long line of problems for Morrison, who had delayed several recording sessions as a result of his heavy drinking. A few days after this check was dated, Morrison and his bandmates gave two concerts at a Hollywood venue, with the lead singer more relaxed and less theatrical—a change from his “exposure” at a Miami concert hall in March. That event also plagued the singer and left his career in doubt. As it was, this relaxed, bluesy version of Morrison wouldn’t last; less than two years later, his self-destructive behavior would catch up with him. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
