Description

Wells and Fargo sign an 1863 American Express stock certificate

Businessmen Henry Wells (1805–1878) and William Fargo (1818–1881) founded the American Express Company in 1850 and the Wells Fargo Company in 1851. By capitalizing on the burgeoning need for express and banking services, both men (and their companies) came to number among the greatest success stories in the commercial development of the American west—and, indeed, became still-familiar household names. Partly-printed DS, one page, 11.75 x 8, April 16, 1863. A handsomely engraved certificate for two shares of capital stock in the American Express Company, issued to Henry Wells, signed “Henry Wells” as President and “Wm. G. Fargo” as Secretary, and also signed again on the reverse again by Wells. Nicely cloth matted and framed, so both sides may be viewed, to an overall size of 16 x 12.25. In very good condition, with expected folds, scattered, but mostly uniform, toning, two light cancellation stamps, one each over portions of signatures on the front, staple holes to top left, and a revenue stamp to top left corner. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
