Description

A unique image as the one-and-only Grand Slam champ achieves golf immortality

Vintage glossy 9.25 x 7.5 photo of Jones winning the Grand Slam at Merion, signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint on its original 13 x 11.75 mat to the founding editor of Atlanta Magazine and Georgia Magazine, “For Jim Townsend, With warmest regards. Bob Jones.” Simply framed and in fine condition with two small creases to the image. Accompanied by the hardcover book, “Life & Times of Bobby Jones,” with the moment before this photo was captured shown on page 160. Consignor notes that this photo was given to Townsend by Jones and purchased from Townsend’s estate.

With America gripped by the Great Depression, sports fans in 1930 turned to the greens and an amateur named Bobby Jones, hoping he would help them forget about world affairs, if only for a little while. And forget they did, as Jones achieved sporting immortality—doing what no “professional” could do—by winning golf's four major championships in one year: the Grand Slam. This was a captivating accomplishment so difficult that it couldn’t help but lift the collective spirit of the nation. The first, and still the only, golfer to achieve that feat, Jones still ranks as one of the game’s all-time legends. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
