Handwritten unsigned poem on a 6 x 8 lightly-lined page. Lee writes out Walter Wintle’s poem “Thinking (The Man Who Thinks He Can).” In full:
“If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you like to win, but you think you can't,
It's almost a cinch you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you've lost.
For out in the world we find;
Success begins with a fellow's will.
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are.
You've got to be sure of yourself before;
You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go;
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins;
Is the man who thinks he can.”
In very good condition, with scattered overall wrinkling, intersecting folds, moderate toning to lower half of page (heavier as it approaches the right edge), and small area of paper loss at junction of folds.
Also included is an unissued membership card for Lee’s Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute, 3.75 x 2.5, signed in black ink “Bruce Lee,” as president of the institute, and also signed by instructor Taky Kimura. The card is in very fine condition. Accompanied by photocopied certificates of authenticity from Taky Kimura, Lee’s prize student and eventually one of only three Lee-certified instructors of Jeet Kune Do.
Lee was a firm proponent of the ideal of honestly expressing yourself and considered the concept to be a fundamental truth of martial arts. Thus, it should be no surprise that he would select this famous Wintle poem, one that focuses on a person’s state of mind, and write its inspirational message in its entirety!
