James Madison

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 17.25 x 16, December 26, 1810. Four-language ship’s papers issued to Samuel Doten “master and commander of the Brig called the Dragon…lying at present in the port of New York bound for Lisbon and laden with Corn–Flour–Beans–Rice–Butter–Peases–Barley.” Signed in the third panel by Madison, and countersigned by Secretary of State R[obert] Smith. Matted and framed with a portrait of Madison, to an overall size of 29 x 22.75. Intersecting folds, scattered light creasing and toning, some small separations along a horizontal fold, and some stray ink blotches along bottom edge, otherwise fine condition.
