Description

Four days after issuing his Proclamation of Amnesty for the rebels, Lincoln signs a presidential pardon for a yankee

Partly-printed war-dated DS, one page, 8 x 10, December 12, 1863. Lincoln orders the secretary of state “to affix the seal of the United States to a warrant for the pardon of Charles Klemm.” Signed at the conclusion in full, “Abraham Lincoln.” In fine condition, with expected folds, a few trivial wrinkles, and just a hint of faint toning along extreme edges.

On July 21, 1862, Klemm was sentenced to 10 years in an Illinois prison after having been convicted of stealing letters—one of 107 violators released for counterfeiting or postal crimes alone. The president’s clemency policy was legendary, as countless people turned to the chief executive begging for their freedom. At times, his decisions were not so much rooted in mercy, however, as in a military strategy that aimed to encourage Union troops to fight against the rebellion. No matter in this instance, it would seem, as Mr. Klemm undoubtedly was happy to accept this gift from a fellow Illinoisan! A clean and visually appealing document. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
