Prominent American explorer, military officer, and politician (1813–1890) who mapped the Oregon Trail, played a prominent part in conquering California during the Mexican War, and ran in 1856 as the first Republican presidential candidate. LS signed “J. C. Frémont,” one page, 4.5 x 7, January 13. Letter to Col. J. M. Tower. In part: “I have spoken to my associates of your visit to me some few days since in reference to placing a colony of Danes upon Mexican lands. They will be glad to see you if it suits your convenience …” Frémont addresses the letter under his signature as well.
