Your notice of him in the Black Hawk war is peculiarly appropriate just now when a *** has denied, through McClure’s magazine, that Mr. Davis served through that war. She brought a whole beehive of indignant people about the ears however, and when I wrote to ask her why she denied to people a statement she said he was not mentioned in the records, but she would try to find the truth about ‘this scrimmage.’ I did not answer her flippant note.” The original mailing envelope panel has been affixed to the bottom of the last page.
