Abel Gance

Pioneering French film director (1889–1981) best known for the silent classics J’Accuse and the six-hour historical epic Napoléon. TLS in French, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, July 25, 1940. Letter addressed to his friends describing his travels and upcoming projects. In part: “In that great chaos that separated all of us from one another, it makes us extremely happy to meet dear friends at various stations of the cross. Steve—who was almost killed at least ten times and escaped by some miracle—was in Montpelier, then last week in Marseille, and undoubtedly will be in Vichy next week. Then he is scheduled to join me in Cannes…where I am staying at the moment while I work on several projects including…‘Joan of Arc’ and…Charlotte Corday.” Central horizontal and vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, punch holes to left edge, and a uniform shade of mild toning, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
