Description

The hero of San Juan Hill praises a soon-to-be Titanic survivor on his book, The Truth About Chickamauga

TLS, one page, 6.5 x 7.75, The Outlook letterhead, July 18, 1911. Letter to Archibald Gracie. In full: “I return the manuscript. I am really very much impressed by what you are doing. I believe you will write a first class book. When you come next to New York take a motor out to Oyster Bay and bring your [Roosevelt has crossed out “friend” and handwrote the next word] family with you.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, small repaired tear to left side, and a rusty paperclip mark to right side.

The manuscript to which TR refers was for The Truth About Chickamauga. The book was published by Gracie in December 1911, with the author expressly thanking Roosevelt in the book’s preface for his assistance and for allowing him to review official papers while conducting research. The following year, in 1912, Gracie would find himself onboard the Titanic, surviving the tragedy but so affected by it that he would die eight months later, posthumously publishing a book on the topic. Strong affirmation from the former president! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
