Nineteenth-century American author (1819–1891) who takes a place among the most influential figures in the history of literature. Though his body of work includes such distinguished efforts as Typee, Billy Budd, and the story “Bartleby the Scrivener,” it was his 1851 magnum opus, Moby-Dick, that would come to occupy a singular position among the greatest works ever produced in the English language. Ink signature, “H. Melville,” on an off-white 9.5 x 7.5 album page, to which was later added a quote from Moby Dick, which reads, “He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it,” as well as a printed portrait of the author under his signature. In fine condition, with some minor brushing to signature, some mild toning, and some light show-through from signature on reverse. Accompanied by the autograph album which originally contained the signature, with most of the signatures being those of family and friends, but included are signatures of Henry Wilson (Grant’s Vice President), William H.
