Description

Upset by his busy schedule, the American satirist complains, “The whole too badness of it can’t be done justice to without ripping & cussing”

Humorous ALS signed “S. L. Clemens,” two pages, 4.5 x 6.75, January 21, 1894. Clemens writes to Mrs. Dodge. In full: “I’m to be in Boston Thursday & Friday—& likewise Saturday, I am afraid. It is just as exasperatingly too bad as it can be—in fact the whole too badness of it can’t be done justice to without ripping & cussing, & it is Sunday & I dasn’t. If ever in this life I get a moment that belongs to me, I will seek you & we will talk. I was so might sorry to miss Jamie, but my room was in scandalous disorder, & I wasn’t up.” In fine condition, with extremely faint overall toning and a few spots of soiling.

Clemens made a substantial amount of money through his writing—but lost much of it in bad investments—forcing the accomplished author to embark on an around-the-world lecture tour in 1894 to pay off his creditors. It was that tour that eventually landed him in Boston for three days, where he found time to send this message. Not surprisingly, Clemens was in great demand as a featured speaker and appeared before a number of organizations, and also wrote a number of articles and commentaries to pay the bills. In the end, however, neither the speaking roles, the freelance writing, or the publication of his rapidly written large-scale work, Pudd'nhead Wilson, was enough to stave off creditors, and Clemens was forced to file for bankruptcy later the same year he dispatched this amusing letter.
