Description

As an election approaches the First Lady admits, “This ballot business is going to be a difficult thing”

TLS, one page, 6 x 9.25, White House letterhead, April 25, 1944. The First Lady looks toward the upcoming presidential election and the problems that soldiers overseas would encounter in trying to cast their votes. In full, “I thought this little bit on the soldiers’ ballot from a soldier in Italy might be useful to you in talking to other Congressmen and Senators. This ballot business is going to be a difficult thing, and now that the soldiers who might have gone ahead without giving it much thought, have heard so much discussion, I think whatever happens will make quite a dent on them.” Given that Roosevelt refers to “other Congressmen and Senators,” the recipient of this letter was likely Will Rogers, Jr., who served as a Democratic congressman from California during this period. In fine condition, with paperclip impression to top left corner and light handling wear. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
