Endorsed Robertson Aircraft Corporation business check, 8.5 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by William B. Robertson, payable to C. A. Lindbergh for $7.15, stamp-dated January 27, 1927. Endorsed on the reverse, “C. A. Lindbergh, Jr.” In very good condition, with three vertical folds, expected cancellation stamps and holes, light soiling, and some light brushing to endorsement.
This item originates from the Robertson collection of checks and acts as reimbursement to Charles Lindbergh for materials which he paid for during the Spirit of St. Louis being designed and built. William Robertson was one of the contributors of the USD15,000 in building the plane. This is considered a Spirit of St. Louis check based on the timing of the endorsement and when it was written. Regardless of the amount it is incredibly rare to have any checks from Robertson aircraft Corporation to Charles Lindbergh from January 1 until May 10, 1927.
On December 27, 1926, one month before accepting this small check, Lindbergh is said to have outlined a plan to acquire an aircraft—the one later known as the Spirit of St. Louis—with his employer, William Robertson, and other men committed to helping him fund the journey from New York to Paris. By January 27, Lindbergh and his crew were already hard at work at making the plan a reality, with Lindbergh setting course for his historic non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in pursuit of the Orteig Prize in May 1927. A nice check signed by Lindbergh as he took a break from planning his biggest adventure.
