Description

John C. and Jessie Benton Frémont

John Frémont (1813–1890) was a prominent American explorer, military officer, and politician who mapped the Oregon Trail, played a prominent part in conquering California during the Mexican War, and ran in 1856 as the first Republican presidential candidate; his wife, Jessie (1824–1902) was the daughter of the famed Senator Thomas Hart Benton and an author of several popular memoirs. Ink signatures, “J. C. Frémont,” “Jessie Benton Frémont,” and “E. Benton Frémont” [evidently a relative] on a lightly lined off-white 5 x 2.25 slip. Matted and framed with a CDV of John and a period print of Jessie to an overall size of 13.5 x 9.5. In very good condition, with light intersecting folds (lightly touching signatures), mild wrinkling, light toning under signatures, and a few tiny chips. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
