Description

“I find that I must go to Boston tomorrow as there is a rehearsal of my Oratorio”

British composer (1842–1900) best known for his collaborations on more than a dozen classic comic operas with librettist W. S. Gilbert. ALS, two pages, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, no date. Letter to Noah Brooks canceling an engagement. In part: “I am distressed at having to break my engagement with you tomorrow evening, but I am powerless in the matter…I find that I must go to Boston tomorrow as there is a rehearsal of my Oratorio…the importance of this you will understand.” Originally from the collection of Noah Brooks. Brooks was a journalist and editor who worked for newspapers in Sacramento, San Francisco, Newark, and New York, and authored a major biography of Abraham Lincoln based on close personal observation. Brooks was also set to be appointed Lincoln’s private secretary but that was aborted after his assassination. In fine condition, with second page trimmed to 5 x 6.25 and affixed to a slightly larger album page, and some light toning. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
