Description

Rare Hughes signed photo in the wake of his trans-global flight world record

Vintage matte-finish 9.5 x 7.5 photo of Hughes in front of a building with Albert Lodwick and Gladstone Williams, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Gladstone Williams, with truly sincere appreciation, Howard Hughes.” Accompanied by a 5 x 4 matte-finish candid photo of Hughes, and apparently the same two gentleman, in a car during a Broadway ticker-tape parade, and a Howard Hughes 1939 World’s Fair air mail envelope. Lightly trimmed edges, some scattered light soiling, and a crack underneath Hughes’s feet, affecting only the background, otherwise fine condition.

In July 1938, Hughes set a world record for around the world flight of 3 days, 19 hours, shattering the old record set by Wiley Post. When he landed at Floyd Bennet Field, 25,000 New Yorkers rushed onto the field to the plane to congratulate him. Later, Hughes was given a ticker tape parade down Broadway in New York City, the source of one of the images here offered. Lodwick, who is shown in the signed image, was an aviation enthusiast and Curtiss-Wright Corporation businessman who served as Hughes’ flight operations manager during his historic adventure; his organizational skills are highly credited for the success of Hughes’ endeavor. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
