Description

Choice Sarony cabinet portrait

Exceptional original 4.25 x 6.5 Sarony cabinet photo, and so noted at the bottom, signed in fountain pen, “Grover Cleveland, May 19, 1897.” Archivally triple cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 13.5 x 16.25. In fine condition, with a bit of trivial spotting to lower border.

Cleveland had just left the presidency in March 1897 when he posed for prominent New York photographer, Napoleon Sarony. Considered to be the greatest photographer of the American theater, Sarony spent 30 years capturing images of virtually every actor and actress who appeared on the New York stage. Obviously, his talents extended to political leaders as well. Located not far away from Sarony’s studio was the Hoffman House, an informal meeting place for members of the Democratic Party, including Cleveland. Though the president signed and dated this image in 1897—one year after Sarony’s death—it is likely that he posed for the famed photography during a visit to New York City, or perhaps for one of Sarony’s associates after leaving the White House in 1897. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
