Description

Outstanding pose of Cody on horseback at his mining operation

Amazing vintage 11.75 x 10 portrait of Cody atop his horse, by Frank F. Leet of Jamestown, New York, and so blindstamped on the image, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To my Pard., L. W. Getshell, W. F. Cody ‘Buffalo Bill,’ Campo Bonito, Feb 20th 1911.” In very good condition, with moderate creasing working in from the edges, moderate soiling to edges, a few areas of discoloration to borders, and some minor haloing of ink to signature and inscription.

Cody was among the most famous entertainers in history. His Wild West Show was an outdoor extravaganza that toured the United States and Europe to sold-out crowds for nearly three decades. The show illuminated the Western frontier for countless American and European enthusiasts, and at various times had showcased the personalities of Annie Oakley, Chief Sitting Bull and Buck Taylor. In 1908, Cody relinquished control of his show to its new owner, G. W. "Pawnee Bill" Lillie, and participated in a farewell tour in 1910. In November of that same year, Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill entered into another contractual agreement—this time for 200 shares of stock in the Campo Bonito Milling and Mining Company in Pima County, Arizona, in exchange for $10,000. The company was owned by a longtime friend of Cody’s and legend had it that the area was rich in undiscovered gold. It was at that business venture that this incredible pose was captured. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
