Description

The US and Canada debate boundary issues, still lingering since the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution

Politician and financial genius responsible for the formation of what is now known as the Ways and Means Committee. ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, no date. Letter to Aaron Vail, charge d’Affaires to Great Britain regarding the Northeast boundary dispute. In part: “If we lay before the Arbiter, the document rec’d from N. Scotia…it will be attended with some inconvenience in our communication to Mr. Vaughan…I would propose that Nov. 5 & 6, being the Grants of land should, together with the two entire certificates which follow, be transcribed for the Arbiter, the certificate of M. Van Buren being annexed thereto, certifying that it is a true copy of the documents…Entire attended copies as communicated to the B. Gov’t, or as received from it, on application of that of the U. States, are also laid before the Arbiter.” In fine condition.

The Northeast Boundary Dispute pitted the United States against Great Britain over the US boundary line with eastern Canada. This line had been mentioned vaguely in the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American Revolution. Gallatin’s letter concerns documents to be presented before the independent arbitrator of the dispute, King William I of the Netherlands, in support of US claims. In his text, Gallatin also mentions Secretary of State Martin Van Buren plus other foreign dignitaries The issue was not formally settled until 1842 with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. Proof that the wheels of progress do turn slowly, as even years after the end of the Revolution, politicians were still hammering out details. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
