Irving the politician misplaces a letter from Henry Clay

American author (1783–1859) best known for his stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.” ALS, written as a member of the American Legation to Britain, one page both sides, 7.25 x 9, October 17, 1829. Letter to Lieutenant Rawlins Thomas of the Royal Navy. In part: “The pressure of various affairs incident to the commencement of a mission has prevented an earlier reply to your letter…I have the honor to transmit to you a note from Mr. Lane accompanying all the letters on the subject of your application…I have made diligent search but regret that I can find no record or copy of the dispatch of Mr. Clay.” In fine condition, with light pencil notation at top, and a bit of mild toning.
